SUMMARY:Graduate Student Symposium - ACS Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:Bonds That Matter:\nSoft Materials for a Sustainable World\nSoft materials (such as polymers\, gels\, colloids\, and liquid crystals) are composed of relatively large organic molecules governed by weak interactions. These materials display unique properties that render themselves useful to a variety of industries\, such as textiles\, electronics\, packaging\, and biomedical devices. As an increasing number of materials are commercialized\, sustainability has become an important consideration. Life cycle assessments (LCAs) are often used to evaluate the sustainability of a material from a multitude of angles such as its feedstocks\, synthesis\, byproducts\, processability\, recyclability\, degradation\, sustainability\, and environmental impact. Unfortunately\, sustainable materials often underperform compared to market standards\, which limits their commercial adoption\, but this gap is shrinking through cutting edge endeavors spearheaded by academic and industrial researchers. The focus of the symposium is the production of high performance\, sustainable soft matter and its role in achieving a circular economy.  Specifically\, the symposium will have two themes: 1) processing\, recycling\, and upcycling\, and 2) biomass valorization and sustainable feedstocks.  \nOur goals for this symposium are: \n\n\nFacilitate the paradigm shift from linear to circular soft matter via dissemination and collaboration of cutting-edge research by leading experts and rising stars in sustainable soft matter synthesis\, characterization\, and processing. \n\n\nProvide the opportunity for deserving undergraduate students to attend ACS who otherwise could not (priority given to students at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions).  \n\n\nDevelop and enhance the networking and leadership skills of the graduate students on the planning committee. \n\n\nClick Here for more information: https://linktr.ee/gsspc2025

SUMMARY:ChemExpo 2024
DESCRIPTION:VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!\nSan Diego ACS will hold their annual event to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life. The goal is to help our community to explore and understand how photography has evolved through the years. Together\, we will learn more about how light is captured to give us images from the first days of photography to today’s modern digital images and the important role chemistry plays in this creative field. \n\nThe main event: 11 am to 3 pm\nThere will be Girls Scout and Scouts BSA badge work starting at 9am\, with setup starting at 8am. K-\n12 students will come between 11am – 3pm to participate in hands-on activities\, take part in a photo contest\, and watch stage demos from San Diego college students. \n\nWhat to Expect\n• Local company\, ACS\, and organization booths\n• University student stage demos\n• Hands On Tables with Miramar College & CSU San Marcos Students and Faculty \n\nWe need volunteers and organizations to:\n• Bring company tables\n• Staff ACS and other organization tables\n• Staff the Scout area\n• Keep the stage demos and raffles running\n• Supervise the photography contests\n• Coordinate volunteers \n  \nPlease sign up to exhibit at the event or to volunteer at volunteers@sandiegoacs.org. Let us know any assignment preferences.

SUMMARY:2024 Distinguished Scientist Award Banquet
DESCRIPTION:Liangfang Zhang is Joan and Irwin Jacobs Chancellor Professor and Chair of the Department of Nanoengineering at UC San Diego. He has published over 280 peer-reviewed articles and was among the Clarivate Analytics list of “Highly Cited Researchers” during 2017-2023. His research aims to invent and develop novel biomimetic nanotechnologies for various biomedical applications\, with a particular focus on drug delivery\, biological neutralization\, and vaccination. \nAbout the talk: \nDiscovery and Translation of the Cellular Nanoparticle (CNPTM) Technology \nThis talk will cover exciting developments in an innovative technology that uses human cell membranes to cover tiny synthetic particles. By wrapping these particles with the natural outer layer of human cells—like red blood cells\, platelets\, white blood cells\, or even cancer cells—we create “Cellular Nanoparticles” (CNPs). These CNPs can behave like real cells in some important ways. For example\, they can hide from the immune system\, specifically target certain tissues or cells\, and interact with harmful agents like bacteria and viruses. This is possible because the particles are coated with the natural cell membranes\, which carries essential proteins and lipids that give cells their unique properties. Moreover\, we can customize these CNPs by using genetically modified cell membranes\, enabling them to deliver drugs more effectively or achieve specific therapeutic goals. \nDATE: Tuesday\, October 16\, 2024 \nTIME: \n6:00 PM No host bar\n7:00 PM Dinner\n8:00 PM Award lecture \nPLACE: The Butcher Shop \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2024-distinguished-scientist-award-dinner-and-presentation-tickets-980449459727
