CHAIR NOTES

Dear esteemed members,

I hope this message finds you all in great spirits and with a sense of fulfillment from our recent endeavors. I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the incredible volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to make our recent participation in the annual Creek to Bay Cleanup, hosted by I Heart and Clean San Diego, a success! I would especially like to thank, Juan Gonzalez-Gonzalez for being a stellar leader in conducting our ACS group at the Mission Valley site of the clean up. Over in Chula Vista, my group successfully planted more than 50 Chollas cacti, a native plant to the Otay region that is also the preferred home of the endangered cactus wren.

I would also like to extend my warmest congratulations to all the upcoming graduating students who are preparing to embark on the next chapter of their academic and professional journeys. Your hard work, perseverance, and dedication have led you to this momentous achievement, and I have no doubt that you will continue to excel in all your future endeavors.

As you prepare to take the next step in your careers, I encourage you to consider joining us for our upcoming May event, "Catalyzing Careers: Showcasing STEM Portfolios for Success” This event will provide valuable insights and resources to help you navigate the dynamic and competitive landscape of the STEM career market. Whether you are exploring internship opportunities, seeking advice on effectively showcasing your portfolio, or are looking to network with local professionals, I highly encourage you to register here.

Also coming soon in May, I am proud to welcome Scott Coffin, a well-accomplished Ecotoxicologist, who has been studying microplastics for over 10 years. Scott previously served as the lead scientist in California’s implementation of SB 1422- Microplastics in drinking water, which required the State Water Board to adopt a definition of microplastics in drinking water and a standard methodology to be used in the testing for such with public disclosure of those results. During his upcoming talk, Scott will present some of his research throughout his career, his story with SB 1422, and addressing the question many of us have had recently: What, exactly, is there to worry about with microplastics?”. Register here.

he month to come is a reminder that giving back is just as important as pushing forward. Let us continue to inspire, innovate, and make a difference in our communities, no matter how big or small they may be.

Warm regards,

Christina Vialva
