Chair Notes – August 2023

Dear esteemed members,

As summer begins to give way to fall, the long summer days are beginning to wane, and chemistry students of all ages are starting to gear up to return to classes. I am pleased to inform you that the Local Section is working on exciting events for our final quarter such as Chem Expo, the Distinguished Scientist Award Banquet, and our Monthly Seminar Series.

I am looking forward to the return of the Local Section Annual Picnic on Saturday, September 23 at 12 PM. It has been over three years since we last held this time-honored tradition. At the Annual Picnic you will enjoy delicious tacos from Chuchy’s Taqueria, a dessert contest, and a family-friendly atmosphere. The Annual Picnic is a free event for ACS members and their guests. Click here to reserve your spot!

Do you have ideas to make our chemically-minded community better? Are you looking to improve your resume with leadership experience? Would you like to expand your network in a meaningful way? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Local Section has various opportunities available. Are you an early or pre-career chemist? Your peers need your representation at the table. Consider joining the Younger Chemists Committee (YCC), running for a Member-At-Large position, or both!

Even if you have never served on a board or committee, do not let that deter you. I would eager take anyone wanting to make a difference under my wing and show them the ropes. Are you someone with previous leadership experience? We will have several vacant positions available without an incumbent including Chair, Chair-elect, Secretary, and Alternate Councilor. The deadline to declare candidacy is September 30. Please email Carolina Ibarra (cibarra@sandiegoacs.org) to declare your candidacy. Click here to learn about the roles and responsibilities.

If you will be attending the ACS National Meeting in San Francisco this month, I encourage you to come by the San Diego Local Section booth and say hello.

With gratitude,

Juan Gonzalez
