CHAIR NOTES

Greetings ACS San Diego Members,

March is upon us, bringing with it exciting opportunities for engagement, learning, and growth within our local chemistry community. As we transition into spring, it's an ideal time to reflect on our progress and embrace new initiatives that strengthen our collective mission.

I did also want to take a moment to apologize for the last minute cancellation of our planned event “Wildfire Effects on Soil and Air & Relevance to Firefighting and Society”. Unfortunately, some things cannot be fully planned for and we received notice that our speaker had to cancel last minute. Without our speaker, we did not have a way to continue forward with the event. While we know that some people may have been disappointed by this turn of events, we want to assure everyone that we have plenty of plans for future events and talks for the rest of this year.

Upcoming Highlights

We are thrilled to be hosting the ACS Spring 2025 National Meeting & Expo right here in San Diego. This gathering will be a fantastic opportunity for members to share research, network with peers, and explore the latest developments in the field. From technical presentations to engaging workshops, there's something for everyone. Don’t forget to check out the Kids Zone, where volunteers can inspire young minds with fun and educational activities about glaciers.

Additionally, as of the time of this newsletter being released, Super STEM Saturday at CSU San Marcos will already have occurred. This vibrant festival introduces families to the wonders of STEM fields through hands-on experiences and demonstrations. It’s a great way to spark curiosity and promote scientific literacy in our community. I was very excited and grateful to be a part of this event this year and I want to extend my gratitude to all the wonderful volunteers we had join us at our Glacier and Cyanotype Photography booths which were ran by local ACS members, as well as the rest of our community of college students and parents that made this event possible. It was a truly fun and engaging experience!

Member Achievements and Involvement

Our section thrives because of dedicated members like you. If you or a fellow member have reached a professional milestone or contributed meaningfully to the community, we’d love to spotlight these accomplishments. Celebrating your achievements not only honors individual efforts but also inspires others within our network.

We're also looking for volunteers to assist with upcoming events. Whether it’s lending a hand at the Kids Zone or helping organize future events and programs, your involvement is invaluable. We still have spots available for volunteers willing to assist hosting our ACS booth for the ACS Spring event as well. Please email me if this is something you would like to be a part of.

Looking Forward

As we continue navigating the year, let’s remain committed to fostering innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity within our section. Your participation and insights help shape a vibrant and impactful ACS community.

April Event- Chemistry Of The Brain

We are working on an event for next month which we hope to host in person, concerning the chemistry of the brain. This event will be focused on mental wellness and we plan to have a speaker who will focus on how a healthy brain's chemistry functions, as well as ways to improve on our health in today's world where stress and disease can be threats to our well being. We plan to pair this with a live activity as well in order to create some engagement with the community. More information coming soon!

Thank you for your continued dedication. I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events.

Warmest regards,

Max Mahler
