Chair Notes – May 2023

Dear esteemed members,

It is graduation season again! Newly minted chemists of all ages and life stages are moving on to bigger and better things. If you are a recent graduate considering your next move, try starting with the high-quality resources available through the ACS. Whether you are interested in breaking into industry, academia, government, or the nonprofit sector, the ACS Careers and the Chemical Sciences explorer is a one-stop shop to learn the myriad of possibilities you can attain with a chemistry degree. On that note, if you are a recent graduate, consider celebrating the end of your journey with your Local Section at Stone Brewery in Liberty Station. On Thursday, May 18, the Local Section will host a professional mixer. General admission gets you a buffet table of Stone’s signature appetizers and a drink ticket good for one alcoholic or nonalcoholic drink. So, print some business cards, touch up that LinkedIn page, and click here to sign up.

Last month, the Local Section celebrated Earth Day by participating in the Creek to Bay Clean-Up event organized by I Love a Clean San Diego. I thank Member-at-Large, Christina Vialva, who acted as the Local Section site captain at the Chula Vista Wildlife Refuge. I also thank our members who invested some of their time to build camaraderie and make a little slice of our planet a healthier place. I also recognize and thank the UC San Diego and Southwestern College Student Affiliate Chapters, who joined me at the Cesar Chavez Park clean-up site. Our combined efforts resulted in cleaning up hundreds of pounds of trash.

In closing, I congratulate my Executive Committee colleague, Councilor Surya De, for being honored by the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research with the P. R. Vijaylakshmi Award for Innovation in Cancer Research. And, of course, the Class of 2023.

With gratitude,

Juan
