Hello ACS San Diego Members,
Spring is in full swing here in San Diego, and with it comes a new wave of energy and events for our local section. May holds a special place in the history of chemistry. On May 20, 1891, the pioneering chemist Maria Skłodowska-Curie earned her degree in physics from the Sorbonne, beginning a legendary career that would lead to the discovery of polonium and radium. Another key moment came on May 12, 1905, when Albert Einstein submitted his first paper on special relativity, a theoretical framework that would transform our understanding of atomic and subatomic interactions. And on May 26, 1931, Irving Langmuir, known for his work on surface chemistry, was awarded the Perkin Medal, underscoring his influence in both physical chemistry and industrial applications. As we transition into May, I’m excited to share some updates and opportunities to connect, learn, and recharge.
We’re thrilled to offer a Yoga Session for Women Chemists on Sunday, May 18th. This event is designed to support both physical and mental wellness and provide a welcoming space for connection within our Women Chemists Committee. Whether you’re new to yoga or a seasoned yogi, we hope you’ll join us for this refreshing and empowering session. For more information please see the flyer attached to the newsletter.
On Tuesday, May 27th, we’re offering the reschedule of our insightful talk on the Chemistry of Wildfires. The first session had to be cancelled but we received a lot of strong interest through emails from the community that were asking for us to put this back on the calendar so we worked to find a new date. It will be moving to a virtual format though to accommodate our speaker. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the atmospheric and chemical factors that drive wildfire behavior and impact. Looking ahead to June, we’ll also be redoing the Inhibitors of HIV-1 Attachment talk with Dr. Nicholas Meanwell. It was a great session that was unfortunately cut short due to technical issues which we have since resolved. Dr. Meanwell has graciously offered to come back again which is great for all of those who also missed out on the first time.
We remain committed to offering programming that is meaningful, inclusive, and engaging. Whether it’s a scientific seminar, a wellness event, or community outreach, we want every member to feel that they have a place and a purpose in this vibrant network.
Thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support. As always, if you’re interested in getting more involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d love to hear from you and help you find a role that fits your interests and schedule.
Warm regards,
Max Mahler and Jackie Trischman
